So I know there are a bunch of you guys going through job issues and changes and here is mine situation with some rear engine america awesomeness for you for listening to me.
I work at a small residential firm that designs huge garages with f'in huge houses attached to them. (see below) Well my boss whose in his late 70's does ALL the designing and I do all the drafting. I have an interview this afternoon in another firm that designs slightly smaller garages with still fairly large houses attached. I think I may be able to be more involved in the other stuff that goes on in the office insted of just being a CADmonkey. Its still a small office (i'd be the only drafter) but they are young and up and coming. My concern is that I'd get over there and be busy during their current rush and then be out. With 2 kids and a house and car payment thats no good. I know no one can predict the future but yea... That concern is somewhat the same here but he has kept me on during a couple slow periods. The pay might be marginally better but it will also be a slightly longer day (8-330 now to 9-5 new) with an extra 5 minutes on my commute. I love getting home early.
I feel like this whole thing would be more of a step to the side than a step forward. At least they might have hot water (it hasn't worked since I started here 3+ yrs ago) I don;t know what I'd say if they offered me a position this afternoon.

Whats even crazier is around back there is a 5th which is his private garage with a private entrance up to the third floor of that rear tower which is his office.

Let's start with a few basic questions:
How long have you been with your current firm?
How many people, besides yourself, are employed at your current firm?
Do you think there is a possibility that your current boss will retire in the next 2-3 years? If so, do you think you have a legitimate chance of assuming his position?
Are you comfortable with the people and position you currently hold at your current firm? (I understand that you want more responsibilities.)
Are you considering this other firm because you feel that they will provide you with more opportunities, you feel that their corporate culture suits you better, or a combination of the two?

I'd say play that your best bet is to make sure you do a really good job @ the interview at the new place first and foremost, to the point that you get an offer. Whatever they offer you, hem and haw over it for a bit and ask for a bit more.
Then take it. If your existing company is a one-man show, run by a guy in his late 70s, he's probably going to be retiring or worse sooner than later. Your long term prospects are better with a growing company with more responsibilities than at one that's just kinda chugging along.

I've been at my current firm 3 yrs this past July. there is my Boss who runs the show, his wife who occasionally answers the phone and basically takes up space, a part time secretary who does about the same plus write contracts and another drafter who is a level ahead of me. If he doesn't retire he'll "retire" of old age but he also says he'll keep doing this as long as he can and he is in very good health. Somewhat but i've always felt as an outsider. You last state, both. They are younger so I feel like they understand the current world better and I may be able to do more there. Here I'm a drafter and thats it. I have a masters and a lot of experience and feel like i'm capable of much more. side note, I have to buy my own toiletpaper

thats what i'm thinking. My biggest drawbacks are getting out later in the day (5:00 vs 3:30) and long term security like anything past 6 months seems like a gamble.

yep and the builder totalt fucked it up. he screwed up the framing for that whole front entry part to the point that my boss went out there and told him to try again.

Interesting.
I would say, first and foremost, do well on this interview with the new company. Have options is always a bonus when making hard decisions. In addition, even though you don't like the hours of the new place, don't let that be a major deciding factor. Getting out a bit later each day and having the opportunity for upward mobility is much better than being stuck at your current level. (If you were in a higher position, I would have suggested that you made hours part of your negotiations with the new company.)
Anyway, I can understand your frustration at not being promoted and feeling like you are being underutilized. So, just do well on the interview, consider your options, and make the choice that you feel is best.

I was thinking of negotiating the hours however even at the new firm which is even smaller I would still be in the same position just with the possibility of more responsibilities but still not much room for promotion like in a structured large company. The new place is also a husband and wife team. I dont know if they have a secretary or not but it sounds like the wife contributes to the office much more than the one here.

Well I dont know if you saw this from my other response but: Whats even crazier is around back there is a 5th which is his private garage with a private entrance up to the third floor of that rear tower which is his office. O and there is also a tractor barn up the driveway a bit. and a horse barn. and a separate reception hall

Well if pay is just as good, you enjoy your work more, and are around people you feel comfortable with, then it sounds like a great opportunity.

I'm probably a little late with this but I would bring up your concern in the interview itself (carefully worded obviously) as well as your desire for more responsibility. Showing that initiative might entice them to address that concern in a positive way in terms of giving you the responsibility you want as well as the prospect of future advancement.
